Red Dragon Rising: Part One

January 6, 2000

I believe that one of the most important issues in this new decade will be the growing military threat from China. Perhaps the best book to document this threat is Red Dragon Rising, written by Edward Timperlake and William Triplett. Their earlier book, Year of the Rat, documented the influence of Chinese money on the last presidential campaign. This new book documents the Chinese military threat.

Consider their list of threats posed by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in China. They show that the PLA is targeting the American people with nuclear weapons and is developing entirely new generations of land-, sea-, and space-based strategic weapons systems capable of threatening any location on the planet. The PLA is also preparing computer warfare against the American homeland, putting all Americans at risk.

They are also selling the critical equipment necessary to make nuclear weapons, and ballistic and cruise missiles to the most brutal terrorist regimes--Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria, and North Korea. This poses a direct strategic threat to the United States and its allies, including Israel, Japan, India, and even southern Europe.

The PLA has also conducted a ballistic missile blockade of Taiwan and intends to end democracy on the island, by force it necessary. And lest you believe that China lacks the will to do so, don't forget that it was the PLA that murdered thousands of its own people during the June 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.

The research by Timperlake and Triplett reminds us of the threat China already is and will continue to be in the future. This Communist regime holds a fifth of the world's population in its grasp and plans to be a major influence in this century. America beware.
