NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR RESEARCH AND THERAPY OF HOMOSEXUALITY

In Memoriam: Paul Denhalter

by A. Dean Byrd, Ph.D.

Dr. Paul Denhalter, chairman and founder of NARTH's Committee on Academic Intimidation, died on August 6, 1997 after a courageous battle with cancer. Paul was 42 years old and is survived by his wife Jackie, and six children.

Paul was an esteemed colleague and friend. He was an incredible scholar and therapist. A strong supporter of a client's right to self-determination, he challenged the A.P.A. to support scholarly dialogue and open discussion on the topic of homosexuality. He was one of NARTH's first supporters, and was present at NARTH's first annual conference.

His own clinical work with those with homosexual struggles was well-known. One of his former patients contacted me shortly after Paul's death. His comments: "Dr. Denhalter literally saved my life. Not only are homosexual attractions no longer center stage in my life, but I have a sense of peace that I did not think was possible." Paul will be missed.

A Paul Denhalter Memorial Fund has been established at Norwest Bank, Snowflake Office, 9 North Main Street, Snowflake, Arizona 85937, account number 7135-820884.
