The 12" diameter hemispherical depression represents a local potential well. Gentle agitation of table (illustrating the thermal agitation present in real systems) causes the pool balls to eventually end up in a non-random arrangement in the center of the table. An otherwise extremely improbable event becomes essentially certain when there is a local potential well.
