The figure shows the geological (historical) distribution of various types of fishes. "Agassiz's example shows clearly," Patterson writes (1977:580), "that belief in evolution is not necessary for the production of such diagrams: the information contained in these diagrams is therefore not necessarily concerned with evolution or phylogeny."
