I wish to especially thank my Internet friend Jim Moore, from the Christian Apologetics Bookshelf (at http://www.bookshelf.jwmnet.com). Jim has been a delight to get to know through Email, and I am indebted to him for making some useful suggestions and for taking the time to correct my English (I am French). I would also like to thank Rich McGee, Director of Research & International Scholars at Leadership University, for providing me with his list of resources on Intelligent Design and Origins, and especially for his friendly encouragements.
This list is destined to help Christians defend their faith and develop their mind by bringing to their knowledge the existence of some resources. I pray that it may help them equip themselves with some spiritual weapons (2Co 10:4-5) , renew their mind (Rom 12:2) and be ready (1Pe 3:15). This list deals mostly with intellectual issues and apologetics. Another possiblity could be to do a correspondence study of apologetics at Southern Evangelical Seminary at http://ses.digiweb.com/index.htm or at the ISOT on the LU site (Email class).
1. This list does not deal with the practical aspects of apologetics. For such practical considerations, I can recommend the book of McGrath, Alistair "Intellectuals Don't Need God & Other Modern Myths: Building Bridges to Faith Through Apologetics". Another useful book may be "Dialogical Apologetics"by Clark, David.
2. I selected resources I find (or assume are) the best , and set side those I like less. Another person may have chosen other resources. This would be very much the case of someone who holds the views of Reformed epistemology. I also tried to choose up-to-date works instead of "classicals" (such as the books of C. S. Lewis).
3.This list does not cover all resources (journals, associations...) neither all topics. I also have a very limited knowledge of the resources existing for some given topics. Those who are not satisfied with this list may consult the list drawn by Moreland, James at the end of his book "Love your God with all your Mind" or by Groothuis, Douglas at the end of his book "Christianity that Counts".
3. Concerning the rating of the materials from simple to difficult, I tried to remain consistent in assigning ratings for all these various materials and subjects. It is however difficult to make abstraction of one's educational background. Another person may have given different ratings.
I have rated the materials herein on a scale of "1" (simple, fun) to "5" (difficult, advanced). A question mark "?" indicates that I could not rate the material for diverse reasons, but still listed it because I assume it is a valuable resource.
Even if one has a university education they may consider acquiring a selection of level "1" resources for use by Christians who have not had the benefit of higher education, non-Christians, or persons who are not predisposed to reading books for intellectual stimulation or curiosisty. For example, this is the case of the level "1" books of Peter Kreeft which employ enjoyable dialogues.
Many of my categories include recommendations for a few resources which I suggest Christians should read or, at least, possess. These are usually level "3" books: that is, they are written with an academic style. These recommended resources are usually followed by a selection of "Additional" resources, which are either easier, more advanced, completementary or more specialized.
In addition to books, I refer to articles published on the World Wide Web or to audio tapes (and to a few CD-ROMs) that can be ordered through the Web. When unspecified, the materials refer to books. The store where most of these various books can be found is Amazon (at http://www.amazon.com/). One can also find some additional information (contents, reviews, commentaries) at Amazon's Web site. Just enter [last name, first name] (e. g. Geisler, Norman) in the author field of the search screen at Amazon's "Search" page. (Amazon is a secular bookstore). However, I recommend buying these books and others not listed here through the Bookshop of the Christian Apologetics Bookshelf where you will also find an increasing list of reviews. Purchasing your books through CAB's "Bookshop," an associate of Amazon.com, would insure that the referral fee profits are used exclusively for a Christian apologetic ministry goal.
For you convenience, all of the books listed in this index that are available for purchase through Amazon.com have been linked directly to Amazon's page for that book. Thus, you may purchase any of the books listed here directly from Amazon.com (just be sure to return to this page (using your browser's "back" button [you will not "loose" your Amazon.com shopping cart]) for the link to your next book at Amazon until you have completed all of your purchases).
2Moreland, James P "Love your God with all your Mind"
4 Sproul, Robert C "Classical Apologetics" (Parts 1 and 3 of Sproul's book lay down the theological and philosophical foundations for apologetics and a Christian mind, dealing with views such as blind faith or the total depravity of the human mind. Those who do not have such problems might skip this book, and directly start with apologetics, and may come back later to it).
