Monday Ministry Minute #21
Reaching Out to Students
Most faculty members have regular interaction with students. These
opportunities to dialogue with students are not limited to discussions
about classroom topics, but often include personal interaction as well. Are
there appropriate ways to reach out to students about the spiritual
dimensions of life? What are some effective ways you have found?
One entire section of FacultyLinc is devoted to helping you reach out to
students. You can find all these tools by clicking the "Personal Ministry"
button at the FacultyLinc site. (http://www.facultylinc.com) You must be
registered on the site to access this area.
In the section on "Outreach to Students," you will find a variety of ideas
on how you can corporately and individually interact with students. Some
faculty groups have corporately sponsored distribution of Christian books
(e.g. C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity). Many faculty groups have effectively
used ads in the local campus newspaper to introduce students to their
faith. You'll find out all the details in this section. There are also
complete instructions on how to host a dinner for international students.
On the individual level, you will find some practical suggestions about how
you can use your office when you have opportunities to interact with
students. One of the most effective ways to reach out to students is to
have a small group of them over to your home. Get all the details of one
way to do this by checking out "Friday Night at the Movies" in this
section.
There are even several group studies that are detailed here that give you
all the information you need to organize a small group discussion. These
sections include study topics, discussion guides and more. After each of
sections there is a place for you to help us evaluate the ministry idea.
Please give us your comments, ideas and suggestions.
And speaking of suggestions - have you found an effective way to reach out
to your students? We'd love to hear about it and perhaps even add it to our
website so that others can benefit as well. Just drop me a line at
msorgius@clm.org. Thanks.
