Monday Ministry Minutes

From CLM Staff Member Mike Sorgius

Monday Ministry Minute #20

Changing People's Thinking One Letter at a Time

Reading the newspaper can be a discouraging task. There seems to be an abundance of negative opinions expressed, especially in the campus newpaper.

You can make a positive difference by writing an occasional letter to the editor. A well-thought-through, articulate, and positive Christian perspective needs to be shared with our society on a regular basis. It is estimated that only one in seven ever write a letter to the editor. What a difference it could make if more of them were from thoughtful Christians in academia!

Dr. James Terhune, Associate Dean of Journalism and Communication at the University of Florida, offers some suggestions on writing a good letter to the editor.

  1. Know the newpapers guidelines (usually found on the editorial page) and stick to them.
  2. Be concise and stick to one subject per letter.
  3. Don't make any personal attacks.
  4. Have someone proofread your letter before you send it in, to check your spelling, grammar, flow, and logical consistency.
The issues that need to be addressed are too numerous to mention. The best issue for you to write about is one that captures your heart. Just remember, we don't need more hateful, judgmental letters. We need sound views from good thinkers.

Scripture: Titus 2:7,8 - "In all things show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified, sound in speech which is beyond reproach in order that the opponent may be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us."

Action Point: When you see an issue that is important to you being discussed in the newspaper, take the time to write a thoughtful Christian response. Perhaps consider writing a longer Op/Ed piece related to your field or interest, and submit it for publication.
